If you’ve been watching this summer’s season of “Diggers,” you’ve probably been riveted by KG and Ringy’s cross-country metal detecting adventures so far. Extreme detectorists Tim Saylor (Ringy) and George Wyant (KG) have been hot on the trail of famous figures from America’s past. From outlaws to presidential dignitaries to folklore’s Headless Horseman, they have taken detectors to the task—finding all sorts of loot and artifacts.
National Geographic Channel’s staff archeologist Marc is in the field with the Diggers all season long tagging and bagging artifacts. These pieces of history are priceless, because they help chronicle and validate descriptions of past events. This week’s Diggers episodes did just that. By finding dated medallions, worker’s buttons and tent grommets at the site of the Ludlow Massacre, archeologists can confirm the location of this tragic event. In Tarrytown, NY (a.k.a. Sleepy Hollow) in the “Sleepy Hollow” episode, Ringy found a part of an oil lamp burner. While it may not have been carried by Ichabod Crane or the Headless Horseman, we know they were carried during the Revolution. Musket balls were also found from the same time period.
Diggers Next Destinations: Tropical St. Croix and Western Mississippi
Who doesn’t love a good pirate story involving bandits and buried treasure? “Treasures of the Caribbean” takes us to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Diggers have been invited to search the sugarcane ruins once known as pirates’ stomping grounds. In the 1600’s and 1700’s the area was plagued by both pirates and the Knights of Malta. Perhaps KG and Ringy can uncover what they left behind! Then, the guys drop anchor in Mississippi where Ulysses S. Grant landed thousands of troops on the banks of the Mississippi River. Civil War buffs and relic hunters will definitely want to tune in for “Grant’s Landing” this Monday night. Legendary Union General and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant may have left his piece of history behind.
